Partnering with City of Chicago assist agencies, such as Contractor Advisors brings us closer to accomplishing the goal of creating a level playing field for small, minority and women-owned businesses and helping to remove barriers to participate on contracts. Starting in 2015, we have supported Contractor Advisors by participating as an exhibitor and/or sponsor at their annual construction conference. This conference offers M/W/D/SBEs an opportunity to network and market their businesses to prime contractors and to participate in educational workshops. We see Contractor Advisors as an important partner in providing M/W/D/SBEs the resources that they need to succeed in the construction industry.

Since 2014, Contract Advisors has been awarded multiple Service and Reimbursement Agreements for MBE/WBE Training programs. They have successfully developed and conducted these programs on behalf of DPS which were designed to provide diverse and emerging construction business owners with a better understanding of industry principles and practices to assist them in operation more efficient businesses. The programs offered by Contract Advisors have included workshops covering the following topics: contract documents, project management, job estimating understanding bid forms and finding bid opportunities, developing a winning business plan, surety bond applications, basic construction accounting and financial management, and credit worthiness. The training offered by Contract Advisors supports the City of Chicago’s mission to assist minority and women-owned businesses with obtaining contracting opportunities in order to become more profitable and self-sufficient.

I first met Suzanne Stantley, President of Contractor Advisors in 2013 when I became a participant in her training and mentoring program. She has assisted my business on many levels from business development and training on subjects like estimating, project management, finding bid opportunities, business operations, financial management and more. I quickly learned the importance of gaining a greater understanding of important principles and how knowing them would help me grow my business. We learned how to manage various construction issues that many of us had not yet experienced. The timing was perfect because we were all experiencing unforeseen issues caused by Covid which made it necessary for most of the cohort participants to pivot or enhance their business models. It was nice to be able to schedule consultations with the various professionals who weighed in on how to handle our specific business issues.
